Cold therapy is best used for immediate relief of injuries. The application of cold narrows the blood vessels, limiting the blood flow to the injury and providing temporary relief. Ice can be applied to an injury several times a day for 10-15 minutes an application. Cold therapy is generally used to relieve pain after exercise or other strenuous activity. Heat products are commonly used to relieve pain before any exercise.
