The chiropractic profession in the United Kingdom now has statutory regulation and the General Chiropractic Council is now well established and has the responsibility of regulating the chiropractic profession, setting standards of practice and conduct and indeed education. The passage of the Chiropractors Act in 1994 had the full support of the medical profession in this country and was backed by the British Medical Association and the Royal College of General Practitioners.
The increased use of chiropractic care in the United Kingdom has been well recognized by the Government and indeed in November a Select Committee on Science and Technology of the House of Lords published a report on Complementary and Alternative Medicine. In that report Complementary and Alternative Therapies were placed into three groups and chiropractic was placed in the first group which included the principal disciplines in the Complementary and Alternative Medicine world.
